Dirt Track Racin at the Lamar Speedway again

(5/10/2010)

Dirt Track Racin’ is at the Lamar Speedway  again
In spite of a threat of thunder storms and a cold wind blowing, Race Cars, Drivers and Fans came together at the Lamar Speedway Saturday for opening night, to see Dirt Track Racing at its best. The night’s program included the URSS Sprint cars, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks, Hobby Trucks, Econos and Mini Stocks. The crowd was absolutely great. It was a good crowd that really looked big and sounded big across the track.  They wrapped themselves in blankets, sleeping bags, and it looked like entire families were all huddled together under blankets. Still they stayed with us and were loud and could be heard in the pits across the track. Their loudest response came when Mark Lawrence #51L got his car upside down in the Hobby Stock Heat Race. He was not hurt and it looks like the car can be repaired. Another was when Joey Shoup in his # 6s modified had his accelerator stick and went over the bank between turns #3 and #4 and made a great big dust cloud. There were a lot of cars that showed up. The URSS had 20 cars that came to Lamar and put on a really good show with their Winged Sprint Cars. The crowd was surprised with a Fireworks show at the start of the Sprint Cars Main Event. There were 49 cars, (several from out of town) making up the rest of the classes. The track remained fast and held up well. Two holes began to form at both ends of the race track late in the show. All of the drivers that I’ve talked to liked the track. Thanks to URSS we hope that they can return sometime. Ryan Simmons did a great job of the play by play announcing. Work will be done to allow the crowd to hear him over the cars. Ron Cook and his speedway team deserve a lot of credit and thanks for keeping the show moving. The only breaks in the action were the necessary cautions and a 10 minute intermission. Cars were lined up and ready to take the track as each race ended. The entire show was over by 10:00. The Lamar Racing Club will have its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday May 4 and begin working to polish and refine all that happened Saturday night.
The Lamar Racing Club and the Lamar Speedway wishes to say Thank You to everyone that was able to come participate in the nights event whether as a fan or as a racer. Thanks to all of the area business that support Lamar Racing. When shopping for goods or services, please always think of these businesses first.
This opening night is in the History Book we look forward to seeing you again on May 15 for another Saturday Night of Dirt Track Racin’.
