The Lamar Racing Club, April Meeting.
The regular monthly meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by President Kelley Morris at the Ports to Plains Restaurant. He thanked all of the members for coming and welcomed Jim Collins from Las Animas to the meeting. Jim is the instructor for the Automotive Course at Las Animas High School. On the Agenda was; March work days, advertising committee report, the Charter Membership Program, IMCA, Insurance, Rules, Ray Orozco/ Concessions, Alta Vista/ Concessions. The Treasurer’s report was given by Daina Morris. The minutes to the March meeting were also read by Daina and were accepted. March Work Day’s report was given by Kelley Morris, Don Woller and Raymond Dechant. The March weather really slowed the work down at the Speedway, however Mike Emick from Emick Excavating and club members Don Woller, Jerry Woolley and Raymond Dechant were able to get a lot of work done to the track surface. The advertising committee report was given by Heather Morris. Time is up for sign sales. Several of the large packages have been sold. The aluminum has been bought and the signs will be ordered. Don Graves gave a short report about the web site. He encouraged all of the drivers to give a short story about themselves on the drivers registration form. The Charter Membership program will end April 15. On Practice Day, the price of $10.00 per person will have to be paid to enter the pits. People wishing to watch from the stands will not be charged. The car registration fee of $25.00 does not have to be paid to practice. Practice will be from 2:00 pm until dark as the lights will not be turned on. IMCA Liscense Registrations need to be filled out and turned in to Kelly. The club has received a letter of acceptance from James Brown Motorsports for Insurance. The insurance will cost $567.40 per night at the race track. Rules for the Mini Stock class were approved. The Track Rules and Regulations were passed out. All of the rules and forms are posted on the website and can be printed out. There was a short discussion about Ray Orozco operating the Concession stand on the stands side of the track. Alta Vista School will operate the concession stand on the pit side of the track for the first five nights. Ron Cook was announced as Speedway Director and Russ Anderson will be the Assistant Director. The club does need more workers for the race track on race nights. Ticket takers and people to help score are needed. The track report was given by Don Woller and Raymond Dechant. There is still plenty to do at the race track. There is trash to pick up, boards to be hauled off, weeds to be removed, that have blown in. We are going to have to get some painting done. The guard rail will be painted. There are several pieces of guard rail that have to be replaced. The infield needs more work and smoothed up a bit. The water truck was worked on and the pump fixed so water was put on the track while Don moved dirt with his grader from one side of the track to the other. The track surface is really looking good. There was apparently rock in the dirt that the motor cycle club hauled in. We need help in getting all of the small rocks removed from the track. Don pointed out that members can go to the track any time and work. Call Don Woller at (719) 688-3399 or Kelley Morris at (719) 336-5414 to find out what needs to be done. April Work Days will be on the 10th, 11th, the 24th and the 25th. The track will be ready for practice and testing on the 17th and there will be a work day on the 18th to gather up the trash. The track sign has been order from Nick Carter. Kelley encouraged everyone that has an Impact fire suit to check it out. Apparently there are some with a bogus label. Meeting was adjourned. Another good meeting and great night with the Lamar Racing Club.
March Work Days Review
March weather played havoc with the work days at the Lamar Speedway. Planed work days had to be cancled because of cold and wind and good chances for snow. In spite of the weather, determination by some of the club members and with help from Emick Excavating, work did procced. Saturday March 13, was a beautiful day and Mike Emick along with club members Don Woller and Jerry Woolley were able to do a lot of work to the track surface. While Darren DeLoach and Buddy Shoup were replacing the weak weathered floor in the announcer’s booth. Work was done to the water truck and the pump to fill the truck, by Kelley Morris and Raymond Dechant. Water was put on the track, while Don Woller mixed the dirt and smoothed it with his grader. The track surface looks good and will be ready for practice on April 17th.
