McLean County Speedway History

(2/14/2015)

Underwood and Mclean County has a deep history of racing that most do not know about, and some do not even know that races are held throughout the summer currently in Mclean County. Race cars go back as far as the car itself, but tracking down stories from folks in the area, racing was going on in Mclean County close to Underwood and for a short time near Garrison. Back in the 1950's the dirt track racing happened out at one of the coal mines, where coal miners and area shade tree mechanics went to blow off some steam in there jalopies.

In the mid 1960's it was decided that the race track should be moved closer to town so races could be held during the Mclean County Fair, local farmers were all called together to go get the dirt and move it into town. The track ran for a few season's but interest dropped off in late 1960's the track was shut down. In 1990 a group got together led by Robert Rosselli of Minot and decided to resurrect the track and get the sport going again. The Mclean County Racer's Association was formed, officers were chosen, and scheduling races began.

The Mclean County Racer's Association has had many different board members since 1990, but they have always put on a show each year since 1990. The track is unique, a true grassroots speedway. Races have to start early enough, and the show must be run quick enough to get done by dark, due to the lack of any track lighting. Simple bleachers and sound system is in place for fans, but upgraded concessions stand has been constructed.

2015 is being set to be one of the best season's yet at The McLean County Speedway, plans have been in the works since last season with some younger blood coming into the organization, and fresh ideas. We are looking forward to working with the McLean County Fair Board, and business's in McLean County to make even more improvements, and put on some of the best racing fans have ever seen! Hope to see you at the races!
