Donnelly Wins the 2014 SCoNE Season Opener at Legion Speedway

Wentworth, NH - Chris Donnelly, the 2013 Sprint Cars of New England champion, continued his winning ways by winning the Bond Auto Parts 2014 SCoNE season opener at Legion Speedway. The racing started in mid-afternoon with a slick track, but by the time feature was run, the sun was off the track and it was getting faster.
18 sprint cars qualified for the feature event under the gorgeous NH blue skies. Bob Giuliani took the first qualifier starting from the outside pole. Rookie Luke Greenwood was impressive with a nice run from the last row to 3rd. In the second qualifier, Dan Douville started from the front row and claimed the first spot.
For the feature event, the ¼ mile track stayed smooth and got faster. Chris Donnelly jumped out to an early lead from his front row starting position and looked to be unchallenged. With 5 laps to go, Doug Sanborn who was running second at the time, slapped the front straight wall hard bringing out the race’s only yellow flag. The restart put Dan Douville in second place where he challenged for the win. It was a great side-by-side race to the finish with Chris on the outside and Dan on the inside. Chris prevailed up on the outside and Dan settled for second place. Clay Dow took the third spot.
The feature race by the two masters may of come down to motors with Chris’s freshened Will Hull engine besting Douville’s 2013 powerplant. Word is that Dan’s 7x will have a new Kondrat Kustoms engine very soon.
Problems for rookie Christine Boesch lead to an interesting story. An incident in practice with the push truck tore up the right side of Christine’s car. A replacement front wing and right front shock were located in the pits, but a right side rub rail could not be had. It just so happed that Legion Speedway’s roadside sign had an old sprint car on top and the old car donated the its right side rail so that Christine could finish out her first night of sprint car racing.
