Swartzmiller Claims Laboon Sportsman Showdown

(8/26/2012)

Bob Schwartzmiller, Robinson Township, PA made his first start in two seasons at PPMS a winning one by picking up the biggest win in his career in the Ed Laboon Memorial 17, in the Sunoco Race Fuels DIRTcar Sportsman Late Models. A good field of 27 cars turned out for the event, 25 of which started the main event. PPMS front runners Jake Simmons and Pat Weldon brought the field down for the start. Weldon grabbed the lead at the start over Simmons, and Schwartzmiller. Wayne Carbo moved into third on lap 2 and for the next 14 laps the PPMS regulars dominated the top 3 spots of the event and were looking for a sweep of those spots. Then on lap 14 things all changed. Jake Simmons slowed and brought out the caution. Simmons pitted and returned. Then on the restart Weldon, after dominating the top spot developed a flat, while the caution came out for A.J. Flick. Weldon pitted and returned. Schwartzmiller took the lead over Carbo on the restart, and the pair put on a tremendous battle for the top spot. Then on the last lap a huge crash on the front straight, involving Scott Bowman, Mark Wagner, Jarrod Westover, Brian Huchko, Mitch Wattelet, and Russ Byler. So that caused a Green/White/Checker restart. Schwartzmiller and Carbo battled for the top spot on the restart, and Schwartzmiller held him off to grab the win. At the checker it was Schwartzmiller, Carbo, Pat Hanley, Bobby Heim, Nick Kocuba, Bob Lipinski, Simmons (who picked up the K&N Performer of the race), Brad Koteles, Kyle Shannon, and Weldon. The heats went to Jake Simmons, Wayne Carbo, and Bob Lipinski, with Simmons winning the dash. Jake Simmons has a large lead over Nick Kocuba and looks to be headed for his 4th PPMS championship.

South Park PA's Keith Barbara picked up his 3rd Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic DIRTcar Super Late Models. The old saying "it's not over until it's over" rang true in the 25 lap main event. Point leader Michael Norris grabbed the lead at the start over Tommy Beck and Steve Baker. Norris had the thing well under control with a comfortable lead over Beck and Baker, with 11th starting Barbara now in 4th. And for the first 19 laps it looked as if Norris was on his way to pick up his third win of the season and second of the weekend. But on lap 20 Norris tagged the turn one and two wall flatting his right front tire and bringing out the caution. This put Beck in the lead, with Baker and Barbara behind. On the restart, Barbara got around both and took over first. On lap 23 Norris brought out the yellow again, with a right rear flat and was done for the night. On the restart Baker got by Beck, as did Tony Musolino and Kyle Lukon so at the finish it was Barbara, Baker, Musolino, Lukon, Beck, Daryl Charlier, Brandon Burgoon, Alex Ferree, Kari Gasser, and Mike Johnson. Burgoon was the K&N Performer of the race while Barbara picked up the Awesome Hard Charger award. Kyle Lukon and Steve Baker won the heats. The close point race will be decided next week between Michael Norris and Alex Ferree.

Pittsburgh PA's Josh Holtgraver grabbed his first win of 2012 in the Brougher's Machine Shop Fastrak Crate Lates. Holtgraver started on the pole, but lost the lead at the start to Dusty Curry. Curry led the first three laps until Nico Dabecco took over on lap 5. Dabecco and Holtgraver then battled for the next 9 laps for the top spot, when a yellow came out for a slowing Scott Schempp on lap 14. On the restart Holtgraver grabbed the top spot and led the remaining 6 laps to grab the win. Colton Flinner came on strong after the caution to finish second and maintain his point lead, followed by Dabecco, Mike Reft, Kyle Lukon, Mike Pegher Jr., Dusty Curry, newcomer Andrew Wylie, Justin Lamb, and Tommy Schirnhofer. Curry was awarded the K&N Performer of the Race. Heats for the 28 cars on hand were won by Kyle Lukon, Josh Holtgraver, and Nico Dabecco. Going into the last night for points, defending champ Colton Flinner leads Kyle Lukon by a small margin.

Chase Evans, Bethel Park PA, won his 3rd BP Car Wash DIRTcar Hobby Stocks feature of the season. Evans took the lead on the first lap from his 3rd starting spot and led the entire distance. Evans defeated Gary Smith, Ed Wiser, Dan Black, Christian Schneider, Joe Podolinsky, Hannah Ramsey (the K&N Performer of the race) and Bernie Blair Jr. Gary Smith won the heat. Going into the last night for points, Joe Podolinsky leads Chase Evans for the championship battle.

Todd Weldon was second followed by Roman O'Neil, Dylan Bolind, David Ostrander, Courtney Chamberlain, O.B. Huff, Jonathan Miller, and Terrance Ryan. Huff was the K&N Performer of the Race.
