Inaugural Ed Laboon Sportsman 17 This Saturday at PPMS

The Late Model Sportsman Division will be showcased this Saturday, August 25th, as Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway presents the inaugural Ed Laboon Sportsman Showdown 17. The Super Late Models, Pro-Lates, Hobby Stocks and Young Guns will also be in action on Saturday. In addition, the always popular Kid's Bike Races will take place at intermission.

rd Annual Jook George Memorial Classic presented by Vox Energy for the Pro-Lates will take place on Saturday, September 1st. This year's event will find the division's competitors competing in a 50-lap main event with the winner receiving a minimum of $1,050.00. Additional monies and contingency awards will also be distributed. Pit and Grandstand Admission gates for this Saturday's racing action will open at 5:00 with the first green flag waving promptly at 7:00PM.

 

Adult Grandstand Admission for Saturday August 25th is $15.00. Seniors, Ages 60 and Over, are admitted for $14.00 with Juniors, Ages 13 to 16, priced at $9.00. Admission for Children aged Six through 12 is $5.00 and Children Under Age Six will be admitted Free. In addition, all children aged Six through 12 will receive a free gift when they present their admission ticket at the PPMS Gift Shop, which now features Apparel by Denise.

 

Pit Admission for this week's racing action is $30.00.

 

In 2012, the management of Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway will utilize a Sunday evening rain date in the event Mother Nature fails to cooperate with the Saturday night racing action. Times for the Sunday rain dates are as follows: Pit and Grandstand Admission Gates open at 4:00PM, Hot Laps at 5:00PM and Racing at 6:00PM.

 

Fans are also invited to bring their own refreshments however; glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. In addition, coolers are limited to 14 inches or smaller in size. Don't forget that the Checkered Flag Food Court has a great variety of delicious food like hot and juicy quarter pound cheeseburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, curly fries, cheese sticks and cotton candy at "fan friendly prices."

 

Race fans over the age of 21 can purchase alcoholic beverages at Ed's Pub, which is located under the main grandstand. Ed's features all major brands of beer plus wine, mixed drinks, and energy drinks at local tavern type pricing! In addition, coolers are limited to 14 inches or smaller.

Join us this Saturday, August 25th as we showcase the region's top Late Model Sportsman competitors and also recognize an ardent supportor of motorsports here in Western PA with the running of the inaugural Ed Laboon Sportsman Showdown 17!!

The 17 lap Late Model Sportsman main event will honor lifelong PPMS and area motorsports supporter Ed Laboon, who passed away August 15th. The winner of the event will receive a minimum of $1,017.00 as additional monetary contributions continue to be received. Lap money will also be awarded to the leader of each lap in the main event. In addition, the Sportsman competitors will compete in a seven lap "Dash For Cash" with the winner receiving a $100.00 paycheck.

 

"The outpouring of support for this event has certainly exceeded our expectations as the total Late Model Sportsman purse is already more than $7,000.00," stated divisional competitor Vince Laboon, who has organized the event. "My father brought me to PPMS for the first time when I was just four years of age and this event is just my way of paying tribute to him for everything he has done for so many in the racing community. The racing community certainly has supported our family during this difficult time and we sincerely appreciate the support."

 

The Late Model Sportsman competitors will be permitted to use any tire brand for this Saturday's event; however all other PPMS rules will be in effect. Anyone with questions on specific technical issues should contact Matt Miley at (412) 736-3142.

 

Race fans should also note that this Saturday is the final NAPA Auto Parts Night of 2012. Fans who present $25.00 of qualifying NAPA Auto Parts receipts at the grandstand admission gate will receive one free adult grandstand admission. This week's pre-race activities include a Petting Zoo from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. The petting zoo will take place near the playground at the main admission gate. Children ages six through 12, will receive a coupon good for one free cup of food to feed the animals when they present their paid admission ticket to the petting zoo attendant. Pony Rides will also be available at an additional cost.

 

Intermission will include the highly anticipate Kid's Bike Races. All children 12 and Under are eligible to compete. Please note that helmets are required for all participants.
