Simon, Eaton, Post, Ralston, Hicks, and Roberts post wins at Waynesfield.

June 12, 2011
By Gerry Keysor

Waynesfield Raceway Park finally beat Mother Nature Saturday night June 11th, as the first full racing program of 2011 was completed with a great night of racing for the fans in attendance.

Makeup features for the Block Thunder Stock Cars and JR and Sons Service Center Compacts from May 21st’s rain shortened event would start the evening.  In the Thunder Stock cars, It was #71 Keith Ralston taking the lead from #52 Sam Bodine on lap 4 and never looking back.  #58p Jim Post would finish 2nd, with #16 Jeff Koz 3rd, #48 Tim Cole 4th, and #52 Bodine Rounding out the top 5.

In the makeup JR and Sons Service Center Compact feature,  #82 Harvey Yoder and #27x Robbie Tuttle would lead the field to the green flag.  Yoder would grab the early advantage, but would quickly feel pressure from #18 Gary Eaton Jr. Eaton would grab the lead before the end of lap 1, but by lap 3 started feeling the pressure from 2 time and defending track champion, #31 Jeff Kimes.  Yoder would slip back from the leaders just a bit and battle with #1s Mike Sawmiller, and #41 Ethan Pope.  The focus was on the front two cars as Eaton and Kimes ran the last 7 laps side by side, neither giving an inch in a tremendous duel on the Waynesfield highbanks.  In the end, Eaton would win by inches over Kimes, Sawmiller would finish 3rd, with Yoder and Pope rounding out the top 5.  Eaton dedicated the win to his father in an emotional victory lane interview.

Kicking off feature events for the regular program were the S&H Nerfs Non Wing Sprint Cars.  #43g Rob Guy, and #23s Kyle Simon would lead the field to green with Simon grabbing the point.  Carnage quickly ensued on lap 2 as Guy would spin in turns 3 and 4 causing the field to stack up and #63H Huston Hewitt would hop a wheel and flip violently into the turn 3 and 4 fence.  Hewitt was able to walk away from the accident, but his car was destroyed in the melee.  When racing resumed, Simon would continue to lead, but #82 Mike Miller from Wapak, Ohio would begin working the high side of the speedway and would close on the leader.  Miller and Simon worked side by side from lap 6 until lap 11, when they began to encounter lapped traffic.  The lapped cars allowed Simon to grab a couple car lengths advantage, but it would quickly be wiped out for the caution flag on lap 12 for the spinning #48H of Scott Hull.  The #42 of Rick Horne, and #2m of Tom Rhaodes would get together as the field was slowing, and the drivers did some finger pointing and yelling before cooler heads prevailed and the drivers headed back to the pit area.  On the restart, Defending track champion Matt Westfall, in the Simon Racing 22s, would begin a great battle with Miller, #40 Justin Grant, and #18 Todd Keen, which would be just enough to allow Simon to grab the victory with Miller a close 2nd, Grant 3rd, Westfall 4th, and Keen 5th.

The Block Thunder Stock Cars A Main would see #19 Bill Reimund and #82 Chris Douglas on the front row at the start.  Reimund would grab the point Douglas, #7b Shawn Valenti and #71 Keith Ralston in tow. Caution would wave on lap 3 for the #27F of BJ Francis, who spun in turn 1.  When the green flew again, it would be Reimund continuing to lead with Ralston starting to close.  On lap 8 Ralston would take the lead for good with Reimund finishing 2nd, Valenti 3rd after a late race challenge from Douglas who ended 4th, and 5th was #48 Tim Cole who charged from 10th starting position.

Next up would be Post AgriService UMP Modified action which would see the A Main by in a blistering pace.  Defending track champion #45p Brian Post would use his outside front row starting spot to grab the lead early and would never look back, grabbing the win over #44 Zach Schroeder, Jeff Babcock would grab 3rd while subbing for Jerry Bowersock in the Army’s Auto #5x. Pole sitter #28 Chad Rosenbeck would finish 4th and #20k Bill Keeler would be 5th.

In JR and Sons Service Center Compact A main feature action, the compacts set the standard for the evening, with the front half of the field all battling for the lead. The only caution flag waved on lap 2 for #20 Cody Kuepper, who would come to a stop on the front stretch for a flat right front tire.  As the race resumed #82 Harvey Yoder would lead, with #31 Jeff Kimes, #41 Ethan Pope, #18 Gary Eaton Jr., and #17 Justin Durfinger all battling for the point.  At the halfway point, the leaders battled 3 and even 4 wide for the lead as the #1s of Mike Sawmiller and the #1 of Buck Purtee would join the fray.  On the final lap, Kimes worked the bottom of the track Eaton in the middle and Durflinger up high, with Eaton picking up the win.  Durflinger would be 2nd, Kimes 3rd, Sawmiller 4th, and Purtee would round out the top 5.

In the Dave’s Reliable Motors Tough Trucks, the brothers #71 Chris Hicks, and #33 Mike Hicks would jump to the front and battle for the lead.  Chris Hicks grabbed the advantage and would try to get away, but Kenton Ohio’s Brian Beach in the #79 truck would try and run hicks down in the latter half of the race.  Chris hicks held Beach off with Mike Hicks coming home 3rd, #MT1 Bill Keeler 4th and #1w “Fat” Matt Twining completing the top 5.

Completing the nights racing action would be the Performance Powder Coating 1000cc Mini Sprints.  #4k Kevin Roberts would grab the lead from the pole and would lead the first 13 laps of the feature, but his son, #22R Kevin Roberts Jr would make the pass for the lead on lap 14 and grab the win, over his Dad, with #13e TJ Heil third, #31 Greg Nicholas fourth, and #23 Devon Dobie completing the top 5.  The race was stopped for caution once on lap 9 for the #28H of “Hot” Rod Henning who spun and tipped over in turn 4.  Henning and his car were not hurt, and would rejoin the field and finish 14th.

Waynesfield Raceway Park returns to action next Saturday night June 18th with the S&H Nerfs Non Wing Sprint Cars, Dave’s Reliable Motors Tough Trucks, JR and Sons Service Center Compacts, and the invasion of the American Mini Sprint Association.  It will be the AMSA’s first visit to WRP in 2011, and it should be a great program.  Pit Gates open at 4PM, Grandstand Gates open at 5PM, Hot laps at 6PM and Racing at 7pm.  General admission $12 for ages 16 and up, $6 for ages 11 to 15, and kids 10 and under get in FREE.
