Several New Faces In Victory Lane In Race #8

(6/11/2011) By Ben Deatherage

This last Saturday saw some great racing at the Cottage Grove Speedway for the eighth event of the season of 2011.  On hand for the night was All-American Street Stocks, Hornets, Limited Sprints along with Micro Sprints and the DAA Northwest Spec Late Model Series.  Friday evening saw the Kage Karts in action for their third race of the season (winner below).

The Limited Sprint feature saw its fair share of action as Heath Shelton of Drain led the entire twenty five lap race.  Despite two stoppages in the first half of the race it didn’t slow down Shelton as he stuck on the high side and put up consistent laps.  It was the first win for the defending champion of the Limited Sprints.

Jesse Thistle of Creswell ran second for the most part and at some points looked to challenge for the lead but was himself being challenged but was able hold on for the runner up position.  The rest of the top five was made up of Mike Carrothers of Cottage Grove, Orion Redmond of Roseburg, and Kady Adelman of Salem.  Fast time of the night was Zack Spaulding of Springfield at 11.780 seconds with Thistle winning the trophy dash and heat race.

The All-American Street Stocks seen T.J. Langan pick up his third victory of the season tying his younger brother for most wins this year.  The Jasper driver was returning after taking last week off for a friend’s wedding in California.  T.J. went unchallenged for the victory as he looks to add a third title to his career.

Second place was Andrew Langan of Jasper while Josh Black of Cottage Grove held on for third.  Russ Blum of Thurston finished in fourth and Darin Crooks of Cottage Grove rounded up the top five.  Fast time of the night was 16.600 seconds with T.J. winning the trophy dash as well as the heat race.

In the Hornet feature it was fantastic race between three cars at the front of the field.  Monte Cox Sr. of Oakland making his first appearance in over ten years (after getting in a violent crash in a Sprint Car) tried to hold off his own son Monte Jr. and Chris Pierce of Cottage Grove.  Cox Sr. stayed out in front and was able to hold on despite three cautions occurring including the rear bumper getting knocked off on one of the several restarts.

Behind Monte Cox Sr. were Chris Pierce and Monte Cox Jr.  Corey Cross of Roseburg finished in fourth while Tony Juaire of Veneta finished in fifth.  Fast time of the night was Juaire at 18.750 seconds, winning the trophy dash was Monte Cox Sr., and heat races were won by Bob Van Cill of Roseburg and Pierce.

The Micro Sprints were on hand for the first time in 2011 with several cars making the trip all the way from northern Washington.  In the main event Kelly Mauck of Burlington, Washington led early put in lapped traffic J.R. Thomas of Bellingham, Washington took the lead and held on for the victory.

Behind Thomas were Brock Lemley of Bellingham, Washington in second and Kelly Mauck in third.  The remainder of the top five was Justen McConnville of Dundee and Sherwood’s Ron Starr.  Fast time of the night was Lemley at 12.930 second along with the trophy dash with heat race winners being Mauck and Hillsboro’s Dylan Marsh.

In the final race of the night was the one and only stop at the Cottage Grove Speedway for the DAA Northwest Spec Late Model Series.  It was the third race of for the series in 2011 with two different winners already it would see a third different one with Billy Workman Jr. of Vancouver, Washington winning the event in an emotional victory in victory lane.  Workman had lost his father and mentor this past winter and it was his first win and several drivers and crews came to congratulate him.

Greg Walters of Banks finished in second as some great see-saw battles occurred for the lead between three cars in the closing laps and the podium was capped off with Joey Tanner of Portland.  Finishing in fourth place Jason Wines of Lebanon finished in fourth with Steve Moore of Scio finishing in fifth.  Fast time of the night was Wines at 13.791 seconds, heat races were won by Tanner, Walters, and Workman, with the trophy dash victory going to Walters and in addition the consolation main was won by Collen Winebarger of Corbett.
