Track owners Ray Evernham and Bob Mack were on hand along with World of Outlaws Sprint Car Star Erin Crocker to witness the final points race of 2010 at East Lincoln Speedway. A large crowd ventured to the racetrack to experience Round Two of the WIX Filter Border Battle, which also featured a $1,000 to win Modified division race. Championship point battles were on the line as the drivers took the green flag on the night’s racing action.
Many fans were anticipating the start of the Stock Four division feature to signal the start of the evening’s feature races. Jason Sitterly, who was involved in last week’s wild main event, started on the pole of the 14 car field. Colton Robinson was running second early on, when he would spin and bring out the first caution of the night. Due to the incident, Hank Kiefer restarted outside Sitterly on the front row. Kiefer slid up high in turn two as the train of cars passed on by him on the low side. After a long green flag run, it was Sitterly coming out of turn four to take the win. Behind him Lee Oiler beat out Jeremy Potter by a nose to claim the second position. Calen Holden finished fourth. Dylan O’Daniel crossed the line fifth to take home the final position in the top five.
Darren Hasty had the Micro Sprint division championship clinched heading into the night, but that didn’t mean he didn’t want to claim one last win in 2010. Outside of Hasty, who started on the pole, was the season’s winningest driver, Terry Peters. A strong run for Nicholas Witt was ended early as smoke bellowed from his #95 machine. Hasty had another strong restart and was able to pull away from Peters as the cars headed down the backstretch. George Blaney brought out the final yellow flag of the night after making contact with the wall in turn two. Robert Clements ran down Terry Peters as the two found themselves in a battle for the second position. Clements and Peters made contact on the exit of turn four. The race stayed green, and Peters and Clements went on to finish second and third after the incidental contact. Darren Hasty took home the win and the points championship. Brian Roseman finished fourth and Jake Ziegler rounded out the top five for the evening.
15 Modifieds lined up hoping to claim the $1,000 purse as the division’s feature race got underway. The division still had a championship on the line as Kyle Strickler led Danny Bohn heading into the final race of the season. Strickler started on the pole with Greg Brown on his outside. Brown slid high in turn two and made slight contact with the outside wall. Brown’s troubles set up a scene fans at East Lincoln Speedway have become very familiar with this year: Danny Bohn and Kyle Strickler racing for the lead. Strickler pulled away from Bohn by several car lengths, but lapped traffic allowed Bohn to catch Strickler once again. A yellow flag set up the final restart of the evening with Strickler leading Bohn back to the green. Bohn looked under Strickler on the start, but Strickler was able to maintain the lead as he went on to take the win. The win allowed Strickler to become the second driver of the night to take home a track championship and a checkered flag on the same night. Bohn finished second. Behind him Matt Emmerling and Derrick Ramey took the third and fourth positions while Shawn Martin overcame early problems and an injured hand to finish fifth.
While Strickler took home the track championship, Danny Bohn emerged as the winner of the WIX Filters Border Battle. Due to his win at Carolina Speedway last Friday, Bohn was able to be the winner of the competition, in which drivers are scored based on their combined finishes at Carolina Speedway and East Lincoln Speedway.
Randy Powell led Jennings Herman by 35 points heading into the Super Stock Four division feature. Last week’s winner Dylan O’Daniel started on the pole, but had trouble on the start and fell back to eighth. O’Daniel’s troubles allowed Powell to take the lead. Under a yellow for a spin by Arnold Propst, Powell was sent to the pits because he was not wearing the proper safety equipment. He returned later and started from the tail of the field. With Powell in the back of the field, Herman had an opportunity to win a championship. Powell’s penalty allowed Josh Cook to restart in the first position followed by Wayne Curtis, Pechi Fioramanti and Herman. The four cars raced two by two nose to tail for the race lead. Meanwhile, Powell was slowly making his way up to the field. The competitive racing up front allowed Powell to catch the lead pack. Powell and Herman made hard and repeated contact with one another as Powell tried to make the pass. The race for the lead was just as entertaining as the race for the point championship as Wayne Curtis gave Josh Cook all he could handle. Cook as able to withstand a shot in turn four to take the win. Curtis finished second. Pechi Fioramanti finished third. Powell ended his championship season with a fourth place finish while Dylan O’Daniel made his way back up through the field to finish fifth.
Jeff Graves and Scott Freeman started on the front row of the Limited Sportsman Division feature race. Ronnie White and Scott Freeman were racing hard for the second position when Blane Huffman joined the party and made the battle three wide. Huffman slid up the track and collected Freeman as the cars both made hard contact with the outside wall. On the restart, White, who was somehow able to avoid the previously mentioned incident, made his way around Richard Smith for the second position. Jeff Graves put on a clinic as he lapped car after car. While Graves took the win, Ronnie White finished second as he won his second track championship in a row. Fans already have a storyline to look forward to in 2011 as White will start his quest to win three championships in a row. Dillon Sigmon, Chris Smith, and Keith Bowman rounded out the top five in that order.
Division Champion Stephen “Steve-O” Newsome started on the pole for the Renegade division feature race. Outside of Newsome was Jamie “Major Pain” Major. Major was able to get a run on lap two and make his way around Newsome for the lead on the outside. Newsome struggled on restarts as he lost his clutch early in the race. Despite his difficulties, he was able to finish an impressive second. Major went on to take yet another win and end the season on a victorious note. Billy Bishop finished third. Jason Boyd finished fourth. Jeremy Jackson crossed the line fifth in his “Mud Money” machine.
While the points races were in the books, there was still one more race on the agenda for the night. Hank Kiefer and Lee Oiler arranged for a special race for all of the Stock Four division drivers that had not yet won a race in 2010. Lincolnton’s Jon Reed can now call himself a winner at East Lincoln Speedway as he went on to take the win. Reed and his crew were ecstatic as they celebrated their first ever trip to Stanley Tools Victory Lane.
2010 has been another great year of racing action at East Lincoln Speedway. None of that great racing action would be possible without the support of the fans, sponsors, drivers and teams that support the track every single week. While the ending of a season is always bittersweet, 2011 is sure to be another action filled year of “Lightning at the Lake.”
